Eastern Screech Owl Children’s Educational Workshop a Great Success

(For more pictures visit our Facebook page)

On April 18, 2026, the Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association hosted a Children’s Educational Workshop on Eastern Screech Owls at Coconut Park in St. Petersburg. The event welcomed 20 neighborhood children, providing a fun, hands-on learning experience focused on wildlife and conservation.

Participants learned about the importance of Eastern Screech Owls and their role in the ecosystem, while enjoying interactive activities throughout the day. The kids had a great time building owl nesting boxes, painting owl rocks, and creating a variety of crafts, making the event both educational and memorable.

A highlight of the workshop was the live owl presentation by Donna Conroy, Mike Stott, and Jelysbeth Bobadilla of Boyd Hill Nature Park, who brought two Eastern Screech Owls for the children to observe up close. We also extend our appreciation to Lara Milligan of the UF/IFAS Extension for leading an engaging and informative program on these fascinating birds.

This event was made possible through the generous support of many community partners. We gratefully acknowledge the City of St. Petersburg for funding this program and providing the use of Coconut Park, along with contributions from Tyrone Chick-fil-A, West St. Pete Home Depot, and Carroll Supply.

Special thanks to Ray Poynor, who provided all of the owl box materials and made the project possible by carefully precutting and predrilling every piece for assembly.

We also thank the Officers and Board Members of the Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association for their time, effort, and dedication in planning and facilitating this successful community event.

The Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association is proud to offer programs like this that bring neighbors together while inspiring the next generation through education, creativity, and hands-on experiences.

Successful March Porch Party

_________________________________________________________________________________

On March 13, 2026, OPNA President Shannery Barnes attended the annual Mayor’s Neighborhood Awards. It was an uplifting evening recognizing the hard work neighborhoods do to help make our city great. Our neighborhood association received an Informed Decision Making Award for the second year in a row, recognizing our participation in the Resilient St. Pete Resident Task Force, which collaborated with the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and the City of St. Petersburg’s Sustainability Department. Over the past year, Shannery participated in workshops to submit and discuss residents’ input regarding resiliency and sustainability efforts. This dialogue helped shape new approaches and goals for the city’s future. The Resilient St. Pete Resident Task Force will continue their efforts, so please reach out to Shannery with any concerns or suggestions.

Resilient St. Pete Action Plan

St. Petersburg officials say there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to the city’s flooding problems, a key takeaway from a public meeting that wrapped up nine recent walking tours of neighborhoods hit hard during last year’s hurricane season.

The city, working alongside engineers from Jacobs Engineering as part of its broader resiliency planning, found that each affected neighborhood faces its own set of challenges.

The neighborhoods studied include Old Pasadena, Kingston Street, Shore Acres, Bartlett Park, Bonita Bayou, Coquina Key, Harbordale, Childs Park, and Riviera Bay.

Knapp Family Adopts-A-Drain

The Knapp Family, members of the Old Pasadena Neighborhood Assn., are taking part in St. Petersburg’s Adopt-A-Drain Program. The City is working with the community to provide information, resources, and educational initiatives related to environmental stewardship. One way to get involved is by participating in the Adopt-a-Drain Program. Halloween Porch Party – A Great Success!

The Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association hosted its Halloween Porch Party yesterday—and it was a tremendous success! Perfect weather, a fantastic turnout, and plenty of festive fun made it a memorable day for all, especially the kids.

This year’s chili cook-off featured eight delicious entries from Shelli Olsen, Eric Douglas, Holly Edwards, Kristin Brett, Quinn Lundquist, Rich Roman & Rob Salko, Dave Downs, and Fred Tirabassi. Congratulations to Rob Salko, who took home first place with his winning chili recipe!

Families also enjoyed an old-fashioned cake walk, children’s craft activities, and a “Guess the Number of Gummy Eyeballs” challenge. With an impressive total of 217 gummy eyeballs, Amelia Lundquist won the jar!

We also raffled off a LEGO Halloween set—congratulations to the Salko family for winning the drawing!

A heartfelt thank-you to all the families who joined us and helped make this community celebration such a wonderful event.

Food Drive Report

Together, through the bonus August West St. Pete Food Drive, we collected an incredible 1,129.85 lbs of donations — that’s more than half a ton of food to support our neighbors in need.

I am so thankful for everyone who donated, spread the word, and made this effort possible:

Azalea Neighborhood Association
Crossroads Area Neighborhood Association
Eagle Crest Civic Association
Holiday Park Neighborhood Association
Jungle Prada Neighborhood Association
Jungle Terrace Civic Association
Lake Pasadena Estate Neighborhood Association
Live Oaks Neighborhood Association
Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association
Westminster Heights Neighborhood Association

They were totally empty before the drive. They are now full. This is what true community looks like — people coming together to lift each other up.

“How do we change the world, one random act of kindness at a time.”

Thank you all!

Sincerely,

Aron Bryce

Yard Of The Season – June 30, 2025

Congratulations to the White family – on the Yard of the Season!

A new initiative of OPNA is to recognize and enhance the beauty of our lovely neighborhood by showcasing a yard that exemplifies the essence of the season. The “Yard of the Season” program is designed to celebrate residents who have worked hard to establish and maintain yards of distinction during each of the four seasons through plantings and/or seasonal decorations.

Our first summer season recognition goes to the White family at 500 Park Street. On hearing about this, Chris White told the Beautification Committee that after spending many years in Asia, they fell in love with outdoor gardens. “They are our happy place” he said.

On behalf of the OPNA effort, Vice President Holly Edwards congratulated Chris and placed a “Yard of the Season” banner on the front lawn. We encourage you to drive by and have a look at this beautiful lawn.

Rezoning Petition July 2024

Old Pasadena Neighborhood petitioned to fight the rezoning of the Pasadena Community Church Property. The neighborhood showed up in large numbers at the City Council meeting in opposition to the rezoning and many of our neighbors spoke out against the proposal. However, the City Council voted in favor of the zoning change.
